1. Improper Planting:
Watch for these #1 problems…Too deep, too much mulch, low-quality nursery stock, shipping baskets left on, tree in
the wrong spot. 2. Improper Pruning and Practices: i.e.
topping, blanket spraying, and improper diagnosis.
3. Water Issue:
over watering, especially in clay, AND lack of watering
4. Low Plant
Vigor: due to lack of care or improper care (feeding, nutrition, neglect, deadwood pruning)
5. Fungal Diseases: leaves are spotting and/or falling off. Examples: crabapples,
oaks, ash, etc.
6. Pine Saw Fly: larvae consume
last-year‘s growth making the plant very thin.

7. Gypsy Moths: these
larvae feed on oaks causing defoliation.
8. Borers: Borers are attracted to unhealthy trees, burrowing in and laying eggs inside the
trunk. The best defense against borers it keep your trees healthy and unstressed.
9. Dutch Elm Disease: many elms are dying due
to this disease, usually mid- to late summer. Trees will wilt and leaves turn brown and fall.
